A company or individual or any other entity associated with Madagascar who wants to host a personal domain is expected to apply for a .mg registration. The Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) allotted for Madagascar or the Republic of Madagascar is .mg. The registrant, whether company or individual, must be registered with the country's authority, and the domain name must resemble the company name. Thus local presence in the country is required for registration in the .mg domain.
The registrar that manages the process of .mg registration is NIC-MG or Network Information Center Madagascar. The written form is the only accepted form for registration. All the information stated in the application should be 100% accurate. NIC-MG reserves the right to refuse approval for a domain name applied for, on the basis of established regulation policies. Since the task of NIC-MG is limited to merely registering the domain name, it does not engage in disputes related to the use of domain name. It allows the creation of domain names that do not already exist in the domain names database. You can directly register your .mg domain name via the website of NIC-MG: www.nic.mg. The Whois server for .mg registration is http://whois.nic.mg.
The .mg registration allows different second level domains like .org.mg for organizational entities, gov.mg for government of Madagascar and government associations, .edu.mg for educational institutions, .mil.mg for military entities and .com.mg for commercial entities. Other second level domains are .prd.mg, .tm.mg and .nom.mg. Domain names with terms suggesting towns, occupations, hospitals are reserved according to the policy of NIC-MG.
A registered domain name can also be modified. If the domain of the applicants is or was managed by a service provider, then the name of the former provider as well as the name of the new provider have to be specified. The requesting organization will hand over a written notice to all the service providers concerned before starting with the modification process.
No requirements have been stated for .com.mg domains; but for .mg registration, either a copy of company registration and tax ID in Madagascar or trademark at the Office malgache de la propriété industrielle (OMAPI), Organisation Mondiale de la Propriété Intellectuelle (OMPI), Institut National de la Propriété Industrielle (INPI) or equivalent is needed.
